[Murotsu Oshima Peninsula] Enjoy a resort atmosphere and rich food on the aloha-like Suo-Oshima

Is Suo-Oshima the Hawaii of the Seto Inland Sea?

The area from Yanai City, Yamaguchi Prefecture to Suo-Oshima, on the western edge of the Seto Inland Sea, is known as the “Murotsu Oshima Peninsula Area.” This time, we went on a trip to thoroughly explore Suo-Oshima, which is connected to Honshu by a bridge. The interview was conducted in summer. As soon as we visited the sights, we noticed the high rate of aloha shirt wearing. Not only the shop staff, but also everyone who seemed to be local residents were wearing aloha shirts.

“Suo-Oshima is the Hawaii of the Seto Inland Sea.” Such a catchphrase is certainly well known in the tourism industry. However, in fact, this is not just an image strategy, but a story with a solid backing. During the Meiji era, many immigrants moved from Suo-Oshima to Hawaii due to an agreement between Japan and the Kingdom of Hawaii, and now it has a sister island relationship with Kauai in Hawaii. The town hall and post office have taken the initiative to implement the policy that “Aloha shirts are formal in the summer,” and the island has become an Aloha island. We set off on a rental car trip to Suo-Oshima, where you can feel the perpetual summer. (Article excerpt)
